A New "District"

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

I got my first coconut latte.

Tasted interesting. And was not what I ordered. Yes, I broke my non-coffee work week. Since Ash Wednesday I only drank coffee on the weekend, and 1 per day too. But today I walked to work and when I came closer to Nine Elms, I checked my watch, showing me a few minutes spare where I hoped to write a few words, so I walked straight ahead to a hidden coffee shop, called “District”. It looks bright, modern, quite spacious – and was packed! There was no way I could get a table for 15 minutes, unpack all my stuff and type this post.

I found out about this shop from RWRD, the coffee shop app, and decided to reward my walk including heavy bags with a coffee.

Usually I would have gone for the chai latte, however, today I chose a normal latte. I paid for it, £3.80, which surprised me, as the menu said £3.20. As I was busy scanning the RWRD QR code at the same time for my first stamp, I didn’t question the price, tapped my card and then headed over to wait for my coffee.

“Coconut latte”, it was announced after a few minutes of me scanning the lovely place. I turned around.

“Sorry, you said coconut latte?” I received a nod. “I ordered a latte, normal.” Barista checked the orders. “Oh, the next one is a normal latte, that must be yours.” I checked the face of the lady who served me. And then, the guy next to me, waiting: “That’ll be my latte, the regular one.” I shrugged. “It’s okay, don’t worry.” Why am I always so polite? I could have got £0.60 of a refund and drink a coffee I would have liked. But, hey, I am currently trying alternative milks and I know now that coconut is definitely not for me! It gave the coffee a very weird aftertaste. Sweet and bitter at the same time. Wasn’t matching.

Even though my first coffee impression was not met at its highest euphoria point, I will go back to that place. It’s an alternative coffee shop to the office café with about 15 minutes’ walk away from my place of work. It opens at 7am, which would be super convenient and hopefully with more empty seats at that time.

All in all, I will come back when I have finished my sugar free period and try the chai latte. If that hits my highest euphoria point, I’ll become a regular customer and collect my RWRD stamps.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Side note: Fun fact: the guy, who waited for his regular latte, works in the same building on the same floor with me! I just bumped into him in our communal kitchen! Small world 😊
