Storm outside - cosy place inside

Sometimes I wish I could just work from those shops. In my head – I can do it all day long, without hesitation. Going for a breakfast / brunch, keep topping up with coffee / tea and have a nice late lunch later. And the cake. Not to forget.

On Sunday I met my friend who has been travelling through Vietnam. The first thing she texted me when she got back was that she fancied an avocado on toast, but the ones in Sainsburys were so hard “you could kill people with them”. Therefore, we arranged to meet for a brunch the next day and met at the Drury Café in Holborn. We were lucky and got a table; 12pm seems to be the best time to go out on Sundays. As soon as we had the menu card in our hands, we briefly studied it, even though there was not a lot to think about: avocado on sourdough with two poached eggs was it. I couldn’t wait.

We ordered at the till and went back to our little table. Wooden, small tables are lined up opposite the till, with stack of books and polaroid pictures attached to the wall. The café also comes with a couch and some bigger tables. Personally, I prefer the small table with the books, surrounded by the what this shop lives of – people. There was even a handwritten note on the brown, recycling napkin from a girl who had been in the coffee shop with her boyfriend a few months ago, but now was single and heartbroken.

Whilst waiting for our food, my friend and I started talking about her trip to Vietnam, about how different the culture there is, how rainy it was in the North and how beautiful the beaches were in the South. Meanwhile, our avocado on sourdough had arrived, which I ate with real pleasure.

The breakfast was finished, but my friend still had so many interesting stories to share, the wind was hauling, and the rain was pouring down, so we decided to get a slice from their enormous cake selection. They had loads of different cookies, brownies and cakes. I was torn between the bailey’s chocolate cake, banana bread and the carrot cake. As I have sworn myself to cut my alcohol intake short and love carrot cake, I went for a slice of it. And it was delicious! Didn’t regret the choice.

After two hours and a half, a lovely breakfast and cake, the rain had stopped and we decided to leave this inspirational, cosy shop and went out into the cold.

It’s one of my favorite places in London. And perfect to catch up with adventurous friends!
